Being the only child, Himanshal Kumar believes that the future of his family lies with him. The 13-year-old was awarded the Student of the Year during the Mulomulo Primary School awards day in Mulomulo, Nadi yesterday.

The school’s head boy attributed his success to his parents for their endless support in providing the best for him.

“For us children, the future lies with us and it is our responsibility to work hard not only for our future but our family as well,” Himanshal said. Everything he accomplished in life, he said was for his parents and he has vowed to support them in their old age. “I want to become an engineer and make my parents proud, to see them smile is the best feeling ever,” he said. He advised his peers to always respect their parents.

His mother 37-year-old school teacher, Pratika Kumar, said they had sacrificed their time for the sake of their child.

“Even though we have only one child we will always make sure we spend quality time with him and see that he excels academically,” Mrs Kumar said. “To see him receiving an award is a blessing and I am so proud to be his mother.”

His father, Raneel Kumar, also a school teacher said they were proud of their son.

“To witness your child achieve such an award during a school prize giving ceremony is indeed a proud moment,” Mr Kumar said.
