Nasinu Muslim College dux Maazil Khan took his family’s financial difficulties as a motivation to win the top award.

The 18-year-old, of Labasa, received the award during the school’s annual awards and Year 13 graduation ceremony at the school on Thursday.

He scooped a total of 11 major awards at the awards ceremony. Maazil was emotional when he spoke to the Fiji Sun recalling the sacrifices he made to accomplish such an achievement.

He was very young when he moved to Suva with his family and due to financial difficulties; he could not afford to buy the things other teenage boys could afford.

“Like other teenage boys, I also had wished to buy new shoes, clothes and other things but I could not because my family could not afford it,” Maazil said.

“I was upset but my family always taught me that whatever I am missing out on today will be affordable tomorrow. And that is what I took as a motivation to keep striving for the best because I do not want my family to keep facing financial difficulties all their lives.

“It was hard; it was painful but I never stopped. I was determined to study; I gave up my leisure hours to focus on my studies to strive for the best.

“The dux award was definitely not what I had expected but I am proud of myself that I won and made my parents proud today,” Maazil said.

His mother, Sofia Khan, 42, said she could not be more proud of her son when she heard Maazil’s name announced as the dux award winner.

“I could not hold back my tears because I know what we have been through was very tough and we had felt bad for not being able to provide our eldest son things he would want like other boys.

“We have big dreams for him and we know that as he scooped the dux award, he will do even more greater things in life to make us proud,” Ms Khan said.

Maazil is waiting for his scholarship to pursue his tertiary education in Professional Accounting next year.
