All teachers who are currently holding acting positions should continue to receive salaries of their acting posts, even during the school break, a directive says. The directive has been issued by the Attorney-General and acting Minister responsible for Education, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Fiji Sun was informed that discussions were ongoing at the Education headquarters that during the school holidays, teachers who are acting in various positions would not be paid for the acting positions but will be paid their normal position salaries. When questioned, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum confirmed that he had been made aware of this and a directive had been issued to ensure no teacher was short-changed.

“We want to ensure that the teachers are all being paid the correct salaries even when they are on holidays – even those who have been acting.

“We had also heard that there were some discussions by certain civil servants in the head office who were thinking of not paying the teachers the acting allowance over the holidays but that is not proper. Thus a letter was issued to ensure all teachers are paid the right salary and the acting positions continue until those positions are filled in substantively,” he confirmed to the Fiji Sun in Bonn, Germany, on Thursday.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum has also asked for an update on the filling of the acting positions which needs to be presented to him when he arrives in Fiji on Monday. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum headed the Fijian delegation to the COP23 meeting in Bonn. He further said that they were keen to make Government a choice employer.
