Tuitubou: Ashwini shows what we can do
Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou has commended Fiji’s contestant at the Miss Lumiere International World Pageant in Malaysia. Ashwini Maharaj, who represented the country, was crowned the third runner up at the pageant recently.
“Firstly I would like to congratulate Ms Maharaj on her participation,” Mr Tuitubou said.
“It is pleasing to see Fiji continuing to make a difference on the international stage through international pageants and equally being recognised for their efforts and dedication.
“Such pageants provide our youth contestants a chance to empower other youths to bring about positive social changes to their communities and Fiji.”
Ms Maharaj said that she would like to encourage youths to feel empowered and use such platforms to address issues concerning them. “Pageants are platforms where one can engage with people in society and transform into a confident contestant,” she said.
“Most Pageants give contestants an opportunity to become a voice to enlighten other people about causes in our societies today by speaking effectively both on and off stage.”
She said that the experience assisted her in expanding her horizons and realising her personal capabilities.
“As the title holder for Miss India Fiji NZ 2016 and current title Holder for Miss Lumiere International World 3rd Runner Up, it has helped me to expand my horizon and views, taking part in public speaking courses and has enabled me to work with others in a supportive environment,” she said.
“I believe pageants do help people from moving from their lowest point of their lives to be a social figure and help others by being their voice and hope.”
Ms Maharaj resides in New Zealand and is a native of Lautoka.
