NON- SEXUAL VIOLENCE OFFENCES STATISTICS- NOVEMBER 2017
THERE WERE 67 PEOPLE CHARGED WITH A TOTAL OF 59 COUNTS OF SEPARATE INCIDENTS LAST MONTH
Of the 67 people charged, five were police officers. One police officer was charged with one count of theft for allegedly stealing a radio and amplifier from a car amounting to $500. Two police officers were charged with one count of assault causing actual bodily harm of a 23year-old man in the Northern Division
The following data is authorised for release by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and relates to the number of formal indictments (Information) filed in the High Courts of Fiji by the Director of Public Prosecutions throughout the month.
This data is confined to incidents of serious crimes other than sexual violence offences which are recorded and published separately. This data also includes offences committed by police officers. There were 67 people charged with a total of 59 counts of separate incidents in November.
The offences were manslaughter (1), manslaughter arising from breach of duties (1), aggravated robbery (16), aggravated burglary (17), theft (19), possession of illicit drugs (1), act with intent to cause grievous harm (1), assault causing actual bodily harm (1), assisting a prisoner at large (1) and dangerous driving (1).
Three juveniles were also charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and theft offences. Of the 67 people charged, five were police officers.

Two police officers were charged with one count of assault causing actual bodily harm of a 23-year-old man in the Northern Division. In another matter, one police officer was charged with assisting a prisoner at large.
He is alleged to have assisted a prisoner to evade police custody after the prisoner’s court appearance. Another police officer was charged with dangerous driving for allegedly driving a motor vehicle in a dangerous manner which collided into another police vehicle causing damage of $12,000.
A 20- year-old unlicensed tractor driver was charged with manslaughter after he allegedly caused an accident with the tractor that resulted in the the death of a 5-yearold girl.
In another incident, a 21-year-old mother was charged with one count of manslaughter arising from breach of duties.
She is alleged to have left the victim and her two children in a house that caught fire.
A one-year-old girl died as a result. Cash amounts ranged from $30 to $10, 000 and assorted items ranged from $500 to over $62,000 stolen during the alleged aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary offences which consisted of home invasions, office and business break-ins and daylight street robberies. The assorted items stolen ranged from handbags, mobile phones, laptops, alcohol, food items, electronic goods and household items. One man was charged with one count of act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He is alleged to have attacked his divorced wife with a cane knife. In another incident, one man was charged with one count of possession of illicit drugs.
A package containing 1.4 kilograms of methamphetamine was found at the accused person’s house.
Three cases were withdrawn after discontinuances (Nolle Prosequi) were filed.
One case was withdrawn after the victim returned to Indonesia without any point of contact while two other cases were withdrawn due to insufficient evidence.
