Police Constable Watisoni Yauvoli has survived a tough six-week course to become the Fiji Police Force’s qualified operational diver, a statement from Police said.

The 24-year-old who is based at the Police Special Response Unit at 8 Miles Nasinu was part of a group of officers who underwent the course run by the Republic of Fiji Navy at Togalevu which he described as tough and challenging.

Police Constable Yauvoli said: “At the end of the six weeks I can understand why those who qualify are referred to as Special Forces divers because your body and mind is put to the test in the most difficult and often risky situations”. “We started with up to 70 personnel from the Police, RFMF and the Navy and at the end there were 10 of us and that is indicative of how strenuous the training was.”

Police Constable Yauvoli who hails from Koro said he considered the training to be a personal test of his ability to withstand difficult situations.

“At times we would be required to swim long distances carrying heavy equipment and while it would have been easy to give up, I knew that there was something positive to be gained at the end of the struggle and that’s what kept me going.

“I am happy that I was able to qualify and represent the Fiji Police Force as some of my fellow officers were not able to complete the training and I look forward to assisting our operations in whatever way possible.” Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho acknowledged the Constable’s commitment. He said it was a great achievement for the institution to now have its own operational diver who has also joined an often elusive elite group of divers.

“The qualifications PC Yauvoli has attained is extremely difficult because of the training and to date only a handful have ever qualified and it is one of the qualifications sought after by many in the disciplined forces”.

PC Yauvoul presented the outcomes of the course to Brigadier-General Qiliho at headquarters yesterday.
