ALISI’S ART SUPPORTS HER FAMILY
Weaving has helped Alisi Tokalaudrodro send her children to school and buy other things needed in the house. She has developed this hobby to generate income for her family.
Originally from Nairai, Lomaiviti, Mrs Tokalaudrodro inherited the skill of weaving from her mother. “My mother taught me how to weave mats when I was 20-years old and I am happy to have mastered the skills,” the 54-year-old business woman said.
“Now I have passed that knowledge to my two daughters. I won a competition at the women’s expo last year and started my business of selling premix in the village. “It was a great pleasure to compete and win. My hard work has paid off and I look forward to participate in future events.”
She said selling her handicraft helped her a lot.
“I encourage the younger generation to learn how to weave because in every iTaukei event mats are used. Weaving is our tradition, which I hope will never fade away.” Mrs Tokalaudrodro was at Furnival Park in Suva during the Lomaiviti Festival to sell her mats.
