Health and safety at work

-

Lautoka

I refer to a letter (FS 8/11) that the environmental conditions inside the Lautoka market is not good.

Yes, this has been the situation for long.

Sitting in the market for 15 minutes is enough to realise this condition.

This is only the tip of the iceberg.

There are many institutions, which if inspected would fail to meet the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations.

I believe the very reason for this section of safety at work was to ensure a healthy and safe environment at all places.

However, this section of the workplace only comes in after a crisis has occurred. Investigations, claims and other related processes are activated then.

Is this the reason for injecting so much finance into employing OHS officers at all levels?

I hope someone will wake up and also wake up this section of OHS and begin what they should have been doing since inception. Let us be realistic.

Better to be proactive than to be reactive. Unfortunately, our system is entirely different.

Our little one's are burdened with carrying their school bags laden with books, on a daily basis, to and fro, from day one. What is the possibility of adopting such a system for our future leaders?
