Miscommunication and injuries to some players contributed largely to Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team disappointing performance at the Dubai and Cape Town 7s tournaments.

Team captain Seremaia Tuwai said on arrival at Nadi International Airport yesterday that they made wrong decisions in crucial moments.

“There is no excuse even though there were lots of injuries,”Tuwai said.

“In Dubai we were playing with 10 men, in Cape Town we had a few defence issues and there was communication breakdown. “This all led to our opponents getting back into the game.”

The seasoned player said despite the disappointing results, he still reckons that the team was ‘off to a good start.’

“I am happy with how the boys performed, Lusi Banuve the new boys too. It’s a good start for us. “In this team there are a lot of new boys but as you can see in both the tournaments it was very close. We made a few errors and in Cape Town I dropped the ball in the last minute. We were up by a good margin at halftime but in the second half we relaxed a bit and that’s how they came back.” Tuwai said playing South Africa was tough adding that playing an experienced side was a huge challenge for the national side and they have to regroup, strategise and plan for the next tournaments. “Our loss came at the hand of South Africa, the most experienced team in the World Sevens Series right now.

“After Cape Town we reviewed both tournaments. We have to consider that there is a lot of new boys in the squad. Sydney and Hamilton tournaments should be different.”
