FNU introduces programmes to suit industrial, regional demands

- LOSIRENE LACANIVALU

More than 40 programmes are being introduced by the Fiji National University (FNU) to suit the Fijian industrial and regional demands. FNU acting dean Salabogi Mavoa confirmed that a number of programmes were realigned to a standard format approved by the university so that it would be better for students. Mr Mavoa said 2018 would bring an exciting era for FNU students because new online programmes were introduced to meet the demand of industries due to the shortage of skilled labour.

“Especially, for trade courses we have new diploma programmess that use the template for the Dublin Accord; an international accreditation, which is good for students making them more marketable and good employees.

“The industries are demanding for graduates and attaches and this is a programme designed to meet their demands.”

During the budget presentation this year, Government announced that students who completed year 12 could take up a course in engineering.

“This is an opportunity for them. Some will be applying for diplomas and FNU has this catered for them in terms of engineering and science,” Mr Mavoa said. .

“We have certificate three for those who finish certificate one and two from technical colleges.

“Certificate four is designed for those arts students who have completed year 12 with a pass. There is no restriction and Diploma programmes are for the science and maths students who passed year 12.”

New bachelors of engineering honors programme with building and civil engineering, electrical, mechanical engineering and electronic programmes will also start next year.

It’s the first time that FNU has an honours programme and Mr Mavoa said they have had a good number of responses from interested people in Fiji and the region. He added the new masters, post graduate and. PhD programmes also start next year.

The FNU acting dean urged parents to encourage their children to join the engineering programme and take up the challenge.
