Children of the Treasure House Children’s Home in Nadi celebrated Christmas in style on Monday.

This was after the Chaudhary family of Nadi visited the home with gifts for the 21 children who live in the home.

“We came here to celebrate Christmas, even though we are from two different religious backgrounds. We are happy to be here to spend time with these children. It’s a great moment for us,” said Avi Chaudhary, who is the director for MEL Company Limited.

They donated gifts, sweets, stationary and lunch, which were received by staff members and residents from the youngest child at the home, who is a two-year-old, to the oldest who is 20 years old. Mr Chaudhary said he has plans to assist students at the home in their tertiary education as well. “We are thankful to all those, who have been visiting us,” said Anshoo Devi a Year 12 student who resides at the home.

“We feel lucky when people out there like the Chaudhary family visit us. It has a great meaning for us.

“We have been having lunch and dinner with families who celebrate Christmas with us,” said Devi, whose ambition to be a flight attendant.

“The visits and the donations to the home have never come at a better time, just as the visit by the Chaudhary family was heavenly.” The love and care extended to residents of the home from families in the community has impressed Saudi Arabia-born Shalyn Matthew of Melbourne, Australia.

“I am fortunate to be here, this is my first time to be involved with such a programme in Fiji even though I have been part of similar initiatives in Australia,” she said.

The 22-year-old law student is in Fiji through the Involvement Volunteer International for a two-week programme.

“This is to take a break for myself and from my studies. It gives me pleasure,” Ms Matthew said.
