SHALENDRA BHAN SINGH ASKS COURT THAT HE BE REMANDED

Aman accused of allegedly murdering his stepdaught­er’s partner on Christmas Day has asked the court to remand him in custody until the case was completed.

Shalendra Bhan Singh, 40, a labourer of Koroipita Settlement in Naikabula, Lautoka who appeared at the Lautoka Magistrate­s Cout also asked for the case to be dispensed off quickly.

Singh appeared before Magistrate Rangajeeva Wimalasena charged with the murder of Kunal Kamlesh Sami.

Objecting to bail, Acting Divisional Police Prosecutor West Inspector Paul Taito said the offence was serious and indictable which carried a maximum life sentence. Inspector Taito said tension was still high and it was for the accused’s safety that he be remanded in custody.

It is alleged that Sami, the deceased, went to Singh’s home at around 8.45am on Christmas Day and took with him six bottles of beer and started drinking there. Singh had gone out to kill a goat and when he returned Sami was alleged to have started swearing at him and making hand gestures. Singh then took a piece of timber used to prop up the window in his home and allegedly hit Sami several times on the head, stomach and leg until he was motionless.

He is also alleged to have kicked him several times while he was lying on the ground.

Mr Wimalasena adjourned the case and remanded Singh till January 12, 2018 when the case would be called for mention.
