The Labasa Cane Lorry and Tractor Drivers Club is not a club confined to look into the welfare of their members but stretches out its hands to support those in dire need.

The club’s president Sen Hussain said yesterday they donated a $100 cheque as a New Year’s gift to a 50-year-old mother who looks after her drug addict son in Tuatua, Labasa.

“We have 52 drivers as our members and we formed this club in December 2015,” Mr Hussain said.

“We collected funds by organising religious music gathering such as Kirtan and Qawali. From this fund we also assist members of the club whose houses have been destroyed in a fire or when death occurs.

To end this year on a high note we decided to help this widow who looks after her son.” Labasa Cane Lorry and Tractor Drivers Club secretary Ahmad Hussain said the members who are drivers and farmers; they themselves don’t have enough cash in hand but still feel the importance to help others. “They say there is a blessing in giving and that is what we are doing,” Mr Hussain said.

“A farmer or driver’s wage is less compared to any blue collar or white collar job.

We understand the value of money and family, hence, this is the reason we decided to walk an extra mile to make a difference in others’ lives.

We even helped patients and contributed money for overseas treatment. Meanwhile, Labasa Cane Lorry and Tractor Drivers Club treasurer Vimal Dutt said they have planned numerous activities for next year and hope to assist more members and those in need. Edited by Mohammed Zulfikar
