Nadi based- professional golfer Sam Lee failed to make his mark at the 2018 Asian Tour Qualifying School First Qualifying Stage held at St Andrews 2000, Rayong in Thailand over the weekend.

He finished at 57th spot alongside Gary Gilligang (England), Anthony Paolocci (USA) and Uli Winhandt of Austria after the gruesome 72 holes where he shot 75, 73, 72 and 73 for total of 293 (+9).

“I did not play too well,” Lee said.

“I made too many mistakes on a tricky golf course. I didn’t make the cut to go to the final stage. I should have been more prepared going into my rounds.

“I was playing well up until the first round, and I think that’s where I got a bit too confident and made careless errors.”

MORE FOCUSED

The Korean born admitted that he needs to be more focussed to guarantee him some grand tournaments this season but has hopes in the Australasian Tour. “Getting the Asian Tour card would have given me a great opportunity to play on bigger events,” he said. “However, I believe I have to perform well on the Australasian circuit before going to a bigger tour. I will not be able to play against better players unless I play well in smaller events. So I will just focus on playing well and improving on the Australasian tour.”

Meanwhile, Thailand’s Tawit Polthai topped the field at the Windsor Park and Golf Club in Bangkok after closing with a second straight seven-under-par 64 to win by three shots on 16-under-par 268 total.

A total of 111 players have successfully advanced to the final stage of the 2018 Asian Tour Qualifying School following the fourth and final round of the first stage held over four different courses. They will now join 131 other players, who have already been exempted, at the final stage of the Qualifying School which will be played over 90 holes (five rounds) at the Rayong Green Valley Country Club and the St. Andrews 2000 in Rayong from January 10-14.
