In its bid to enhance service delivery the Consumer Council of Fiji (CCF) has set up a back to school mobile unit in Labasa to encourage consumers to visit them if they face problems with retailers.

Stationed at the unit in front of Janta Tek Limited, to attend customers’ queries yesterday, was Labasa-based officer Nanise Veikoso

Council chief executive officer Premila Kumar said over the years this unit proved to be effective and successful in terms of service delivery.

“Sometimes when parents go back to the trader to discuss their problem, for instance such as wrong selection of uniform size, the trader will not listen,” Ms Kumar said. “Some parents live very far from town and they don’t come with their children and seek assistance from the trader. “Sometimes when they return home and put the uniform on the child, it doesn’t fit well so they need to change the size.

“When they acquire our services and discuss such problems with our representative at the unit, the matter is solved there and then. “I thank the traders for coming forward and assisting consumers even though it is through the council.

“The colour of the uniform or the exchange of uniforms sizes are some complaints we have been receiving.” The common problems the unit has been receiving over the years or even when the school opens are the poor quality of shoes and poor quality of school bags.

Parents visit the council’s unit and complain that the seam of the bag or shoes opened within few weeks of school.

“We have to deal with such issues,” Mrs Kumar said. “The unit will be set up on and off in Labasa and not necessarily every day. We will see how the people respond for a couple of days and if there is a need then we will continue.”

The mobile unit will also be activated in Nausori and Lautoka as well on dates to be confirmed.
