Ahouse wife and her family were still shaking their heads in disbelief at the large sum of money they received just for a temporary move. Merekeleni Moceadrau of Nailega Wainibuka received more than $70,000 from Fiji Roads Authority (FRA).

She was approached by the FRA and Ministry of Lands on June 2015 and April 2016 to relocate and make way for the construction of the new bridge in Vatuwaqa.

Mrs Moceadrau settled at Lot 158 Fletcher Road in Vatuwaqa for the past 24 years and leased her lot for 99 years. According to Mrs Moceadrau FRA paid out the sum of $32,000 for the cost of the land on June 9, 2015, and $45,000 for the cost of property on April 26, 2016.

This gave them the option to move out to the new area and help with the setup after they signed an agreement with FRA.

The family then decided just to move across the road during the construction of the bridge.

“I paid some boys back in the village to come and help us relocate our house on the other side of the road,” she said.

“We were surprised. We wouldn’t have this cash without the construction of the Vatuwaqa bridge.”

After the opening of the Vatuwaqa bridge on Thursday, the mother of five decided to move back, with the FRA and Department of Lands also confirming and agreed that Mrs Moceadrau can make the move.

“We bought this land from a man in Rewa for $5000 when my husband was still alive,” she said.

According to Mrs Moceadrau FRA paid out the sum of $32,000 for the cost of the land on June 9, 2015, and $45,000 for the cost of property on April 26, 2016.
