BCF Chief: Title Fights Soon

- WAISEA NASOKIA NADI Edited by Leone Cabenatabua

The Boxing Commission of Fiji is working towards getting belts of respective weight division from overseas.

This was confirmed on Thursday by BCF chairman Bulutani Mataitawakilai indicating that title holders would now have their name engraved on it.

“We’re still in the process of procuring new belts from overseas and they should be in before August,” he said.

Mataitawakilai indicated that they’re putting strategies in place and are projecting a great year for the sport.

PROMOTERS

Mataitawakilai said four promoters have registered their interest to promote with Westwood Boxing Promotions to start on February 2 at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay’s Convention Centre.

“BCF will be issuing three promoter licenses. Looking ahead, we expect to have professional boxing programmes in every three to five weeks,” he added. “The next five months have been tentatively booked by promoters, so boxers and clubs including the general public should expect a lot of professional fights this year. The only challenge we expect this year would be the availability and cost of venues. “There is a lot to be improved in the administration of professional boxing and also on the standard as well. BCF is working hard through the guidance and support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports to deliver our best.”

BOXER REGISTRATION

Mataitawakilai said they’re calling out boxers to register with them by paying the annual fee of $50.

“We’ll not allow any boxer to fight if registration fees are not paid. The fees collected will be for administration purposes and support promotions, and training of managers and trainers,” said Mataitawakilai.

RING OFFICIALS

Invitation is extended to individuals who want to be part of referee and judges unit. “The BCF will be organising a two-day referee and judges training in Suva from February 1-2 in partnership with World Boxing Foundation.

“This training is to up-skill our current six officials and we hope to attract more individuals including young people and women who can contribute to the growth of this sport as officials.

“Our officials are going to be WBF accredited after this training, and we are expecting 15 to 20 participants to attend.”
