Thirty-two-year-old Vijeshni Prasad stood helplessly and watched her mother get hit by a vehicle earlier this week at Matavou Settlement in Nadi.

Her mother, Maya Wati, 61, was rushed to the Nadi Hospital. She was then transferred to the Lautoka Hospital, where she died. “I was looking forward to spending time with her and showing her our new family home, which my father had built,” Ms Prasad said.

The late Ms Wati was living in Uciwai Settlement with her son and was on her way to spend a few days with her daughter when the accident happened at around 7am. She has three children and four grandchildren.

“I saw her getting off the bus with my two sons, she then tried to cross the road and that’s when a car hit her; the impact threw her to the other side of the road,” Ms Prasad said.

“I ran across the road with tears and found her lying motionless on the road. I was also worried about my sons, but thankfully nothing happened to them.

“My father was looking forward to showing her our new home which he had worked hard over the past few years to build. “She was always happy and didn’t hold grudges against anybody whether its family or friends, my mother was loved by everyone.”

Police alleged that a 35-year-old driver, while heading towards Suva from Nadi, bumped the woman who was trying to cross the road.

Police are still waiting for the post mortem examination results to determine the cause of death.
