Akbar reminds doctors to uphold ethical standards
Physicians from around the country were officially stamped in as doctors yesterday and ready to be dispatched to various health facilities.
Sixty-eight doctors were inducted into a health system that the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Rosy Akbar, intends to sufficiently staff.
Ms Akbar referenced the doctor’s Hippocratic Oath in urging the inductees to uphold ethical standards. She asked the doctors to put the people first while carrying out their role.
“It saddens me when I hear reports of doctors who are rude, or perceived to be uncaring, in their dealings with patients,” she said.
“I firmly believe that the vast majority of our patients receive excellent care but let us not forget that although we are providing them a service free of charge, we are treating our people who have feelings.” She said doctors needed to “question and challenge” inappropriate or unsafe behavior.
“I ask you please treat your patients, your colleagues and your working environment with care and respect,” she added.
“I know there will be times when you are confronted by a patient who is unreasonable, argumentative or simply unpleasant – but you must remain calm and professional.”
The Ministry of Civil Service will assign the doctors to their new stations.
