Iliesa Tanivula has named a strong squad for the 2018 Women Sevens Series in Sydney, Australia, next week. The Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s head coach said the players have sacrificed a lot during the festive season and deserved to represent their country. He expects the team to better their performanc­e after they returned from Dubai winless last month.

In a first for the World Sevens Series, the women’s tournament will be completely integrated with the men’s and will be held across three days on January 26-28 at the Allianz Stadium, Sydney.

Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor congratula­ted the team and wished them well.

“You have sacrificed a lot over the festive season with your dedication towards training,”O’Connor said yesterday.

“It was not easy but it was something that had to be done especially since we did not do well in Dubai.” O’Connor challenged the team to up their game and improve their performanc­e as they build-up towards the Commonweal­th Games.

“We wish you all the best and remember that when you get on that field, you not only represent yourself and your families, but you also represent your village, your vanua, your teammates back home, all young girls and women and more importantl­y you represent Fiji and all Fijians.”

The team play their first match against Canada at 11.22am, Russia at 1.44pm and Ireland at 4.50pm next Friday.
