Speeding On New Nadi Roads Worries Authority

- ARIETA VAKASUKAWAQA Edited by Naisa Koroi

The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) is concerned about the way people drive on the newly developed four-lane road along the Martintar Section in Nadi. This issue was highlighted yesterday during a press conference with the authority’s chief executive officer, Jonathan Moore, in Namaka, Nadi.

“The way drivers are treating that road now, it could be a motor racing track. This is insane,” he said. Mr Moore suggested that there was a need to have controls in place along that road to prohibit drivers from speeding.

“This is really shocking and we are installing more controls down in Martintar,” he said.

The authority intends to install more traffic lights and put in place a reserve medium – like pedestrian crossings – to protect people on the road. This is expected to being installed within three months. Mr Moore said they were also in the process of discussing installing speed cameras.

A road safety audit would be conducted soon, which would give them an insight to the exact places within the Martintar section to modulate the speed of traffic. “This is the problem when you make a nice road, they want to race on them. I wish they wouldn’t,” he said.

Mr Moore said they would carry out their second road safety audit on the newly developed roads in Nadi. He also said plans to place a pedestrian crossing at Fiji National University Campus in Namaka were expected to begin mid next month.

“We will be fencing off the roads as well, put fencing along the road to direct pedestrians to the right place because right now it’s just random crossing,” he said. Mr Moore will be travelling around the Western Division every month to inspect the road and projects done by his team on the ground. He will then later call for a press conference to give the media an update on their work.
