Coach Gareth Baber aims to defend Hong Kong Sevens, win Commonwealth Games and Rugby Sevens World Cup
Fiji Airways Fijian 7s coach Gareth Baber says winning every tournament in the World Sevens Series, the Commonwealth Games and Rugby Sevens World Cup is part of the plan in 2018.
The Welshmen made the comment after sevens legend Waisale Serevi highlighted that Fiji should prioritise on defending the Hong Kong Sevens on April 6-8 or send the best team to the Commonwealth Games to win the first gold medal for Fiji a week later.
Baber and his players are planning to win all the major tournaments.
“That’s the objective of every other sevens team in the competition, ”Baber said.
“All we have to do is to ensure that players are in the right condition and shape at the right time.”
Baber is confident his players can win Fiji’s first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and back-to-back tournament wins in the World Sevens Series. “We are aiming for that and I am confident in our players in getting the job done,” Baber said.
“Defending the Hong Kong Sevens is big so as winning the Commonwealth Games and the Rugby Sevens World Cup in July. Baber highlighted they would be working hard in terms of winning those big tournaments for Fiji.
Baber also highlighted that there were other selection criteria that must be met as well in order to for players to be given the nod for national duties.
“This is includes discipline and good behavior on and off the field,”he said. “They must understand that they are role models to aspiring young rugby players in the country.”
Baber was also among the special guests at the 2018 Mana Whey Fiji Coral Coast 7s in Nadroga.
