USP-resort venture reaps rewards for both parties

Ajoint project to boost education and ensure better qualified personnel is reaping benefits for a hotel and the University of the South Pacific (USP). Radisson Blu Resort Fiji at Denarau, in Nadi, released a statement on Monday which said that intakes from USP had increased over the years and was seen as a worthy investment.

“The internship intakes for the Radisson Blu Resort Fiji have increased since the resort first partnered with the University of the South Pacific (USP) in 2015,” the statement said.

“So far the Radisson Blu Resort Fiji has undergone internship training for 11 competent USP students also simultaneously running a USP graduate management trainees programme where identified potential team members are groomed for supervisory positions. “This year the resort has engaged four students from USP to conduct their 12-month internship at the resort where they will train in all departments to gain exposure, practical skills, build their resumes and have a better understanding of the hospitality and tourism industry before resuming their final year of studies.

“The promising 2018 interns are Richard Misau, Adi Elenoa Draunidalo, Mary Cokanasiga and Graduate management trainee Marisia Qoli.

“The internship is a second-year requirement for the USP School of Tourism and Hospitality Management degree prior to graduating.“Radisson Blu Resort Fiji general manager John Bendtsen said both sides were reaping the rewards of the successful partnership. “The programme is beneficial for both parties, while interns learn the ropes in time they can also fill relevant positions and grow their career within the resort,” Mr Bendtsen said.

“Also, the database of potential students discovered during the career fairs acts as a reference for future vacancies.

“Every year the resort attends the USP Careers Fair to meet and interview possible interns, graduate management trainees and potential upbeat team members.

“A good number of interns have secured permanent employment within the resort and have now moved up to supervisory positions. “Giving back to the community and social responsibility is a major facet of the Carlson Rezidor Hotel brands (the resort’s parent company).

“We will continue to show our support in developing local future leaders.

“We plan to increase our intake on interns in the coming year.”
