Athletics Fiji team manager to the 2018 Commonwealth Games Joseph Rodan Junior is happy with the results of the first trial at the ANZ Stadium on Saturday.

Rodan was especially impressed with Malakai Kaiwalu who cleared the bar at 1.96metres in the Open men high jump; Eugene Vollmer leaped 14.90m in the Open men’s triple jump;

Aaron Powell clocked 11.17sec in the Open men 100metres; Makereta Naulu clocked 12.56sec in the Open women 100m;

Miriama Senokonoko sets the pace in the women 400m clocking 59.82sec;

Mustafa Fall threw a distance of 14.38m in the shot put.

“I’m happy with our first time trial results,”Rodan Junior said. “We got our best jumpers, jumping around the 2metres mark in the beginning of the season but there is more work to be done. “Our track runners are also trying to find form after the break.”

Rodan Junior strongly stated they would pick the best nine athletes on form.

“We are only taking athletes who are performing and progressing well even though our first choice are the gold medallists from the Pacific Mini Games but we have nine spots to fill.

“We only had five gold medallists having our first time trial was to see how they holding their form or what they need to improve on,” Rodan Junior said.

“If we have athletes who won silver and have come through and perform better we will take them as we will pick on form.”
