The people of Bouma on Taveuni are happy they can now watch free television channels like their counterparts in other parts of the country.

And, yesterday the people were applauding the Walesi digital television platform, which facilitated this luxury.

Village headman Taitusi Lualala said it was a day they were looking forward to.

“It was a blessed day because today we can finally watch programmes that the people in the urban watch,” Mr Lualala said. “I thank the Government for thinking of us. This means a lot to us. The children are very happy.”

Fane Cinavilakeba, 14 of Naselesele said she was happy to be able to watch different programmes.

“It feels good to see the Prime Minister of our country come to our village and do something for us,” Fane said.

“I just can’t wait to watch news and know what is happening around us.”

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said through terrestrial and satellite network, the Walesi signal was now available everywhere in Fiji.

“We are well on our way to broadcasting free-to-air digital television to every home in the country,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“The initiative is a major victory for Fiji, and a major milestone in my Government’s mission to give every Fijian, regardless of their socio-economic status or their location, access to more and better information and, of course, entertainment.”

The Walesi platform has eight channels including FBC, FBC 2, FBC plus, Fiji TV, channel 2, MaiTv, Hope Television, and Parliament channel.

Mr Bainimarama also launched the Walesi platform at Naselesele and Somosomo villages, also on Taveuni.
