Court issues bench warrant in theft case

Abench warrant was issued against a Suva man yesterday after he failed to appear at the Suva Magistrate­s Court for a theft charge.

The accused, Ratu Varani Matavulo, is charged with Malakai Tawanakoro Mira after they allegedly stole $7060.70 worth of items from a house in Namadi Heights on January 8, 2016 between 4am and 5am.

Stolen items include:

■ four rugby jerseys worth $480 ■ six t-shirts valued at $90

■ two three-quarter pants worth $30

11 men’s vests worth $110 a Next brand pull over jacket worth $30 two Samsung remote controls a Sky Pacific remote control Playstatio­n 4 console worth $1500 a blue ray player worth $450 a Huawei wi-fi worth $250 a Remington hair clipper worth $100 a 40-inch Samsung flat screen television valued at $1495 two Puma brand runners worth $200 a blue Adidas high cut shoes worth $110 three Nike runners worth $300 a 3kg Boom laundry powder worth $15 two 1.2 kilograms Weet-bix cereal worth $16 two pairs of “Sting” boxing gloves worth $160 a Kraft BBQ sauce worth $8 a 90 gram Richies oven popped rice worth $6 a Whey protein powder worth $200 a two-litre bottle of soya bean ■

Magistrate Kashyapa Wickramase­kara also extended the bench warrant against Mira whose first bench warrant was issued on August 31, 2016.

Police Prosecutor Constable Walter Taito made an applicatio­n for a trial in absentia and is expected to provide a sworn affidavit on the next court date from the Investigat­ing Officer or the Crimes Officer at the Samabula Police Station. The case was adjourned to April 27 for mention. ■ ■ ■
