- Edited by Jonathan Bryce Feedback: karalaini.tavi@fijisun.com.fj

It has always been Ratu Rakuita Qerewaqa’s dream to be headboy of his school. On Friday the young man’s dream came true when he was inducted at St Thomas High School. Though it was supposed to be a happy moment for the 17-year-old from Nuku in Serua, Ratu Rakuita was also saddened that his mother was not be able to attend this special occasion.

His mother, Lieutenant Ana Navalulevu, is currently serving under the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force at Golan Heights.

However, Ratu Rakuita had his father and grandfather attending the induction.

“I was surprised to be chosen as the head of the school, and this is a dream come true,” he said.

“My mother could not make it today since she’s in the Golan Heights. Though we skype often, but I still miss her a lot and I wish she was here.

“I know she is very proud of me and she would tell me to be strong.”

Ratu Rakuita added to be the head of the school means to set a good example and portray discipline to other students. Meanwhile, school headgirl Camari Waqawai seems to have leadership roles in her genes.

Her mother, Laisana Waqawai was once a headgirl for the school in 1992.

“It feels so good to be the headgirl of the school just as my mother was and to do my family proud,” she said.

“My goal is to help the students in any way possible, especially academically and keep the school’s pass rate as it was last year.”

A total of 32 class prefects were inducted.
