COP23’s young stars shine again
Fiji's little darlings, 12-yearold Timoci Naulusala and 11-year-old Shalvi Shakshi, dazzled the gathering at the 4th ABU Media Summit on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction, at Sheraton Fiji Resort in Nadi yesterday.
The captivated the audience just like they did in Bonn, Germany, during the COP23 summit in November.
Both spoke passionately about how climate change has damaged their communities and pledged to continue advocating for an awareness of how this is the biggest threat to human existence.
Speaking first, Shalvi, who comes from Nasarawaqa in Bua, urged participants to keep speaking out about how our ways of living is contributing to the adverse weather Fiji is experiencing.
"We must do something now. We cannot wait any longer. The time to take action is now. We are all at risk if we don't work together to put a stop to what we are seeing in our world." Timoci, quoted from Desmond Tutu and said people were more informed now than they were years ago.
"We must actively pull our resources together to combat climate change. We cannot be ignorant anymore," he said. "After TC Winston, we had nothing left in our village. As I watched, everything around me turned from green, to yellow and then to brown. It was a sad sight to see.
"And this is happening everywhere around us." The duo received loud applause from the conference participants at the end of their presentations.
