Tilak High School’s first inter-house athletics competition since 2014 was held at Churchill Park, Lautoka yesterday.

The school renamed their houses after some endangered species./ Kacau House won the inter-house amassing the overall titles with 28 gold, 20 silver and 13 bronze medals.

Vice-principal William Eliesa said the renaming of the houses was the first for the school and will held special significance to the students.

“Having to rename the houses would make the students more environmentally aware of those species which are on the verge of extinction,” he said.

“This is the first time that the school has done this which holds special significance to the school since we have not had an interhouse since 2014.”

Eliesa commended the newly refurbished Churchill Park. “Our school does not have proper tracks for the students to train in, let alone for us to host an interhouse such as this,” Eliesa said. “Thanks to this new Churchill Park, the children will have the best facility to train on.” Chief guest and Senior Education Officer Nadi/Lautoka/Yasawa, Paterisio Tunidau encouraged the athletes to enjoy the competition. Houses:

Green: Vokai (named after the crested iguana);

Blue: Mam (Rotuman name for the fish also known as the Varivoce); Red: Kulawai (parrot) Gold: Kacau (bird only found in Gau).
