Inspired Woodworker Pens First Novel

- SHELDON CHANEL Feedback: Edited by Mohammed Zulfikar sheldon.chanel@fijisun.com.fj

Writing a novel for woodworker Tulia Nacola was a fulfilling journey spent in isolation away from the regular hustle and bustle of life. Inspired with stories passed down by her parents, Ms Nacola, in ‘Strength of a Name,’ writes about the struggles of a young boy in his transition from village to city life. Through her novel, she hopes to keep the art of storytelling alive seeing it as integral to forming identities and giving people a purpose in life.

“We need writers and story tellers to come out of the woodworks and gift us with the talents that were gifted to them from birth,” the 35-year-old said.

“There is so much written and read through social media and the web that we somehow have lost the art of filtering.”

The book is set for release at the end of this month. She says on her Facebook page that it took her over a year to write the novel. But the process of writing was by no means a straightforward one.

“In my experience, from the first stages of writing the book, I had to completely detach myself from everything that I knew,” Ms Nacula said.

“I isolated myself so that I could hear my thoughts and ideas. I had an idea about a book but I didn’t rush into it. Instead I set up a foundation to prepare myself to write, and when I was ready, I listened and it flowed.”

Ms Nacula urged aspiring writers to find a style they are comfortable with and perfect it.

“People are different; I may have approached my process in a completely different way that is only comfortable to me and not necessarily to others,” she added. “But whatever it is that you want to do, you need to find yourself and be comfortable with yourself before you can do whatever it is that you want to do, to the best of your ability.”
