A64-year-old man of Wailevu Village in Macuata is grateful after he managed to escape when his house caught fire. Kavaia Lekenaua was sleeping alone when he woke up at around 2am to see smoke inside the house. “I was sleeping when I suddenly woke up and saw that there was smoke in the house. I ran outside when I realised what was happening,” Mr Lekenaua said.

“I was lucky that I woke up at the moment I did because if not it would have been a different story today.”

Mr Lekenaua said he was attached to the house, which had a lot of fond memories.

“The house was built in 1973 and it was a four- bedroom house. The total cost of the damage will be around $100,000,” he said.

“I think the fire started from the shed outside the house.” Mr Lekenaua will for the time being stay at his son’s palce.

The National Fire Authority in a press release stated that “At 2.25am, Labasa Fire Station received a fire emergency call and immediately responded. Upon arrival at 2.31am, the Fire Team saw the corrugated iron and timber structured house fully engulfed in flames.

“The Fire Team used water from the fire trucks and also used the fire hydrant in the area to extinguish the fire. The team also saved two adjacent houses in the area. No one was injured by the fire.”

NFA investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.
