Vodafone Fijian Bati chaplain Pastor Ilaitia Tagituimua has started his sports evangelism programme reaching out to youths through his sports team called Elim Brothers.

“I believe that God wants to tell me start a team just for the sake of winning souls for his kingdom, whether it is for rugby league or rugby union,” Tagituimua said.

The Narere based, Elim Brothers will be competing in the 2018 Fiji Bitter Marist 7s on March 23-24.

Tagituimua was in charge for the Fijian Bati spiritual preparation in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup in Australia where the Fijians reached the semi final and lost to Australia 54-6.

The Rakiraki, Yale Kadavu native strongly believes sports could be used as a medium of outreach to youths to make changes in the community.

“Also constantly reminding them that God must be the center of their preparations.

“Our primary goal is cultivating our players’ character because that develops talents and gifts,” he said.

He said this was important for an athlete’s character building.

“If it is not safe-guarded then this makes a person’s talent vulnerable, but our aim is to develop these talents with character building.”

Tagituimua was part of the past three RLWC 2008, 2013 and 2017.

He said the key to the success of these three tournaments was only through God. “Fiji was one of the inexperienced teams back in 2008, 2013 and even in 2017 compared to the other teams. We only made it through God.”

About “ELIM”

“It is named after an oasis where the Israelites were refreshed during their Exodus after leaving Egypt.

“There were twelve wells of water and seventy date palms,” and that the Israelites “camped there near the waters.”
