Get It Right On Walesi

- Jyoti By Pratibha Feedback: jyotip@fijisun.com.fj

SODELPA Member of Parliament Viliame Gavoka yesterday made an outrageous claim in Parliament- that Walesi Digital TV project involved progovernment journalists.

His comment was mocked by the Government side and laughter erupted through Parliament when Mr Gavoka made such remarks. Minutes prior to his remarks, Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said one of the many plusses for Walesi

TV is the ability for school curriculum to be viewed by all students at the same time despite geographical differences.

Minutes after the exchange, National Federation Party went ahead one step and posted on their Facebook account that the Walesi national digital television platform is “managed by the Fiji Broadcasting

Corporation, of which its chief executive officer, Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, is the younger brother of the Attorney-General”.

This is an outright lie. The platform is not managed by FBC. They have no say in its management at all. Neither FBC nor its CEO have anything to do with it. In fact Walesi has its own Board which is chaired by the Solicitor-General Sharvada Sharma.

By 7pm yesterday, the incorrect post on NFP’s Facebook page had been viewed more than 200 times. Walesi platform is an attempt by Government to connect 100 per cent Fijians to television.

Fiji TV has two channels on it, FBC has three, one is for Parliament, one Hope Channel, one for MAI TV. Edited by Percy Kean
