Awards Will Help Students Develop, Express Creativity

- LOSIRENE LACANIVALU Edited by Percy Kean

The Kula Awards is all about the school students and for the students.

These were the words of the Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Faiyaz Koya as he launched the 2018 Kula Awards at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva on Friday. Mr Koya said the Kula Awards was a major development programme for Film Fiji.

“Now in its 13th year, it provides a great avenue for students to develop and express their creativity,” he said.

“The Kula Awards truly uncovers talents of our students that may otherwise be hidden and it helps them understand the world around them.”

He said since the inception of the programme in 2006, the number of schools participating increased exponentially.

This year 41 schools will participate and that is arecord number. Mr Koya said the audio visual industry was growing rapidly and the Fijian Government would continue to provide the relevant resources for the marketing and development of the audio-visual sector.

This year schools participating will come from as far as Taveuni, Vanua Levu and Kadavu. It shows how much this programme had grown in the last 13 years.

“We have seen some amazing work done by our students in the past and we are certainly looking forward to something similar or even better this year.” Mr Koya said. “The ministry will again partner with Film Fiji to sponsor the Kula Film Competition. “Therefore, the Kula Awards is an opportunity that we provide to you every year and I always encourage students to participate.”
