Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has stressed that religious festivals like Ram Navami are not only about rituals, but were a time for self-reflection.

Ram Navami, which marks the birth of Lord Ram, will be celebrated today.

While speaking at the Ram Navami celebrations in Cunningham Stage four in Suva, the A-G said by focusing on stories in the Hindu religious book Ramayana, one should learn how to lead their lives as individuals and focus on the relationships with others.

He added that there were many lessons and examples in the Ramayan on how to lead our lives. The Attorney-General stressed that human beings would be close to living life as animals if they did not do things in the right way.

“Hopefully our getting together creates a sense of community, awareness, caring and looking after each other. This should continue,” the Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said. Also speaking at the Ram Navami celebrations in Lokia Nausori, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum highlighted that we needed to respect everybody. “We must inculcate the lessons we learn from such religious events to guide us in the way we live as good human beings.

“We need to think what kind of future and environment we are leaving behind for our children, who are the future of our country. If we leave behind a better environment, this is what our children will see and learn," he said.

During the celebration, the A-G also presented certificates to the members of the Lokia Vaalvikash Ramayan Mandali.
