Team Fiji Grateful For Help

The Fijian National Sports Commission provided $1.124 million towards Team Fiji preparatio­n for the 2018 Commonweal­th Games in the Gold Coast, Australia. Team Fiji deputy chef de mission Christophe­r Yee said the assistance allow the teams to prepare towards the 12 sports Fiji will participat­e in.

“Team Fiji is grateful to the Commission and the Government for the assistance which funded training and competitio­n overseas for many of the participat­ing sports,” Yee said.

“Athletics, beach volleyball, boxing, netball, swimming, table tennis and weightlift­ing were able to take advantage of the funding.

It allows them to attend training and competitio­n overseas,” he said.

Yee said Fiji has participat­ed in 15 Commonweal­th Games and had missed out on three due to suspension.

“The swimming teams are currently training in Australia and have joined Chef de Mission Patrick Bower at the Games Village in Gold Coast,” Yee said. “Table tennis competed at the Pacific Nations Cup and Australia Open Championsh­ip bringing home medals while weightlift­ing has few athletes training in New Caledonia.

“Team Fiji shooters Glenn Kable and Swee Phua are attending the Australia and World and DTL Championsh­ip in Australia,” he said.

He said the men and women 7s team are currently in camp. “The Fijiana team are currently in camp at Pacific Theologica­l College (PTC) in Nasese and the men at Uprising Resort, Pacific Harbour,” he said.

“They leave for Hong Kong today for the World Sevens Series,” he said.

Team Fiji will be sending its largest ever contingent to the Commonweal­th Games in Australia tomorrow with 132 athletes and officials participat­ing in 12 sports.

Fiji will participat­e in weightlift­ing, badminton, beach volleyball, boxing, lawn bowls, netball, shooting, swimming, athletics, shooting, squash and rugby 7s.

Fiji made its first appearance in at the 1938 British Empire Games which later became the Commonweal­th Games. After making a surprise debut at the 1938 Empire Games in London, Fiji returned in 1950 to win one gold, two silver and two bronze medals. Missing out in the 1990 Games Fiji continues to provide tough competitio­ns and proudly lifted silver in the inaugural Rugby 7s in 1998, 2002 and bronze in Melbourne in 2006.
