Team Fiji Grateful For Help
The Fijian National Sports Commission provided $1.124 million towards Team Fiji preparation for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, Australia. Team Fiji deputy chef de mission Christopher Yee said the assistance allow the teams to prepare towards the 12 sports Fiji will participate in.
“Team Fiji is grateful to the Commission and the Government for the assistance which funded training and competition overseas for many of the participating sports,” Yee said.
“Athletics, beach volleyball, boxing, netball, swimming, table tennis and weightlifting were able to take advantage of the funding.
It allows them to attend training and competition overseas,” he said.
Yee said Fiji has participated in 15 Commonwealth Games and had missed out on three due to suspension.
“The swimming teams are currently training in Australia and have joined Chef de Mission Patrick Bower at the Games Village in Gold Coast,” Yee said. “Table tennis competed at the Pacific Nations Cup and Australia Open Championship bringing home medals while weightlifting has few athletes training in New Caledonia.
“Team Fiji shooters Glenn Kable and Swee Phua are attending the Australia and World and DTL Championship in Australia,” he said.
He said the men and women 7s team are currently in camp. “The Fijiana team are currently in camp at Pacific Theological College (PTC) in Nasese and the men at Uprising Resort, Pacific Harbour,” he said.
“They leave for Hong Kong today for the World Sevens Series,” he said.
Team Fiji will be sending its largest ever contingent to the Commonwealth Games in Australia tomorrow with 132 athletes and officials participating in 12 sports.
Fiji will participate in weightlifting, badminton, beach volleyball, boxing, lawn bowls, netball, shooting, swimming, athletics, shooting, squash and rugby 7s.
