Millions of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints worldwide yesterday (Sunday) sustained their new world leader, President Russell M Nelson as the prophet, seer and revelator in what the church calls a solemn assembly. The sustaining vote by priesthood quorums and groups was carried out at the morning session of the General Conference at the 21,000 seating capacity conference centre at Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. Many made the pilgrimage to Salt Lake City for this special occasion. Members were asked at the conference to sustain President Nelson by raising one hand, usually the right to show their support after a new church president begins his service. The proceedings are beamed live by satellite to TV stations, radio and the Internet. Those who live in different time zones such as Fiji will view the conference by video next weekend. They too have to vote. Latter-day Saints around the world gather to show support for the new Church president and others included in the Church’s worldwide governing body including general membership from age 8 and older. The Doctrine and Covenants, a collection of foundational revelations in the Mormon canon, contains several references of God asking Church members to “call your solemn assemblies” (Doctrine and Covenants 133:6). These meetings are held, in part, to follow the teaching that “all things shall be done by common consent in the church, by much prayer and faith” (Doctrine and Covenants 26:2). Common consent in the Church is an agreement among the members and leaders of a congregation, local or worldwide, regarding proposed assignments given to people within that congregation. Individuals choose to accept an assignment, and fellow members then have the chance to show support for that decision. A form of congregational common consent was practised in biblical times, as found in the book of Exodus, when Moses “told the peo- ple all the words of the Lord” and “the people answered with one voice” (Exodus 24). President Nelson, 93, was a worldrenowned heart surgeon. He replaces Thomas S Monson who died in January. He was sustained with his counsellors Henry B Eyring and Dallin H Oaks.
Elder Wakolo addresses conference
Elder Taniela Wakolo, the highestranking Fijian official of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, yesterday addressed millions of members during the biennial conference of the church. He spoke in the afternoon session of the conference at the 21,000 seat Conference Centre in Salt Lake City, the headquarters of the church. The conference was beamed live by satellite to television stations, radio and internet worldwide. Fijian Saints will view a video of the conference next week because they are in a different time zone, Elder Wakolo is a general authority and member of the Seventy. His assignment is to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ under the direction of the 12 apostles and the First Presidency. He spoke on the importance of ordinances that are performed in the temple and the sacred covenants made in the temple, One of the ordinances is the marriage of a man and woman for time and all eternity. It means the marriage does not end at the grave. And families are sealed forever.
