More than 40 families from Nawaka Village in Nadi yesterday received food rations from the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) team on the ground in Nadi.

This team included Government officials from various ministries within Nadi and assisted by a team from the 3rd Battalion Fiji Infantry Regiment (3FIR) of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

Food ration packs included basic food items like sugar, milk, biscuits, tinned meat and bottled water. The rations are meant to last the families over the next few days.

Nawaka Village headman Mosese Ronakuru said they had opened three evacuation centres in their village to accommodate families whose houses were flooded. The village consisted of 80 households.

“One of the evacuation centres accommodated close to 25 families, another accommodated four families and the church accommodated another 15 families, their houses were all underwater,” he said.

Meanwhile another 15 families at Saint Andrews Primary School, in Nadi, also received food rations.

Jone Corekula of Nawaji Kuma Settlement of Nawaka in Nadi thanked the Government for the food rations. He said that they had been using Saint Andrews Primary School as an evacuation centre for the past two days.

“At first there were 75 families accommodated here but the majority have left for their respective houses and now only 15 families remain,” Mr Corekula said.
