Soldiers Clean-Up In Flood-Hit Ba, Nadi

- MAIKA BOLATIKI Edited by George Kulamaiwasa

Seventy-three Suva soldiers from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) have been deployed to Ba to help in the clean-up exercises. RFMF director of peacekeeping and adviser to the Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Pacolo Luveni, said some soldiers were deployed on Monday and a further 22 from the RFMF's engineers unit joined them yesterday.

He said soldiers based in the Western Division were already engaged in the cleanup campaign.

Commissioner Western Manasa Tagicakibau told the Fiji Sun yesterday that the 73 soldiers deployed from Suva would help clean up at Ba Town.

The rest will help clean up schools and other affected areas in the Ba hinterland. Mr Tagicakibau said the deployment of soldiers in the West on Monday helped hasten clean-up in Nadi and Ba towns.

“In both towns they helped in the cleaning up of schools affected by the flood,” he said.

He also said personnel from the National Fire Authority and the Fiji Corrections Service helped in the clean-up. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama confirmed to the Fiji Sun yesterday that he would inspect the flood-stricken areas in Nadi this morning. “I’m leaving for Nadi first thing tomorrow morning,” he told the Fiji Sun at the Suva City Carnegie Library after the launch of the Virtual Reality Film production Our Home, Our Hope.

He is urging every Fijian to join the struggle to build a more climate-resilient Fiji.
