Fiji Roads Authority is closely monitoring the condition of roads in areas affected by floodwaters caused by heavy downpour brought on by Tropical Cyclone Josie at the weekend.

The FRA has therefore urged motorists to remain vigilant, tune into the local radio and listen to the advice of the emergency services

Yesterday, the authority announced the closure of some roads nationwide:

21 roads in the Western Division

9 roads in the Northern Division

6 roads in the Central Division All roads are open in the Eastern Division,

The authority said several roads around the country had been damaged by massive floods. In some areas underground water pipes were exposed because of soil erosion. The authority has advised motorists to drive very carefully, slow down, and be aware of debris on the roads.

Floodwaters may have changed the road surface in some places, so motorists should expect an increase in the number of potholes, the authority said. Contractors would be carrying out remedial work as soon as the weather cleared up, the authority said. Meanwhile, Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) was working to identify and repair water mains that have sustained damages during the weekend’s flooding.

WAF also encouraged members of the public who notice any leaking water pipes alongside roads in the Western Division, to report it to its National Call Centre on 5777 or 334 6777. The Water Authority of apologies for the inconveniences caused and is working towards getting water supply in the Western Division restored as soon as possible.
