49 Runners For Ultra Marathon

Forty-nine runners are ready for the first ever 200km Vodafone Lost Island Ultra Marathon race which starts in Yaqara near Togovere Village in Ra today.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Ultra marathon spokeswoma­n Josephine Prasad said preparatio­ns are on track as participan­ts are camped near the start line close to Togovere.

“While one runner from Denmark drops out due to flu, Kristina Madsen will be cheering her fellow athletes,” Prasad said.

“Kennol Narayan and Daniell Cowley tested the first part of Stage 1 yesterday and believe they are ready.

“Mana Sport Supplement­s have donated Whey protein and glutamine and many runners have put their hands up to try them over the next few days.

“Some of the tracks are inaccessib­le by vehicles and drinking water is being carted by guides from the communitie­s, horses and tractors to checkpoint­s along the route. “Stage One starts at 7am today and will be 35km to Raviravi Village.

“The global village of runners are backed by a global village of volunteers who will be working hand in hand with villagers from across the Suncoast to Sigatoka when the ultramarat­hon ends on Sunday.

“We have Joji Tamani, former Japan’s sevens player who played at So Kon Po providing all the insights as well as Derrick Cleland one of Australian volunteers, shared the bestest ever brownies he baked from a two generation recipe.”
