Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Lands and Mineral Resources Faiyaz Koya surrounded by volunteers and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Delta Company personnel at the Punjas Distribution Centre in Navutu Industrial area, Lautoka. The group were preparing rations for distribution to people in flood affected areas.

The Fiji Red Cross Society has assisted 916 households comprising of 4299 individuals during their Tropical Cyclone Josie response operations in the Western Division.

About 74 volunteers of the Fiji Red Cross have been dispatched to communities across the Western Division. Marketing and Events manager Bridget Middenway-Blümel said the society would continue assisting those households affected by the recent floods. Ms Middenway-Blümel said they were handing out non-food items since it would help people whose homes were affected.

“The majority of the Fiji Red Cross Society branches in the Western Division have begun distributions with assessments running simultaneously as they progress with their work,” she said.

“Our team still continues to work on the ground with distributions of non-food items in the communities assessed earlier on.” In the Northern Division, the society Labasa Branch president Seinimili Raura said they were continuing to reach out to those affected by the floods.

“Our volunteers were on standby since Tropical Cyclone Josie caused flooding in most parts of Fiji, including the Northern Division and now we are conducting assessments and distributing aid to affected settlements,” she said.

“Heavy rain since Monday caused flash flooding and power cuts in several parts in the North, meaning volunteers were unable to reach some villages cut off by floodwaters. The water level on many roads around Labasa has now receded enough for Fiji Red Cross teams to get through,” she said.
