School Hosts Families

3 6 families from Nanuku, Veidogo and Muanivatu informal settlement­s are sheltering at the Saint Marcellin School yesterday because of severe flooding. There are 82 are adult females, 83 adult males, 47 young women, 57 young men and eight toddlers at the evacuation centres. Seventy-three year old Legalega Diana and her family were evacuated to Saint Marcellin School, in Vatuwaqa, early yesterday morning as flood waters entered their home in nearby Wailea Settlement.

Ms Diana, of Namosi, said her family did not panic when they saw flood waters rising because she knew Police officers would advise them on which evacuation centre to head for.

The elderly woman had come from Navua to visit her family in Wailea, an informal settlement in Vatuwaqa.

She was at the evacuation centre along with six of her family members.

A total of 36 families from Nanuku, Veidogo, and Muanivatu informal (squatter) settlement­s are sheltering at the Saint Marcellin School yesterday.

The group comprises 82 adult females, 83 adult males, 47 young women, 57 young men and eight toddlers.

School caretaker Tavite Sili said officials from the Ministry of Education had visited the centre for assessment purposes.

Fiji Police Officers and Republic of the Fiji Military Officers had also visited the centre earlier in the day.

Ten classrooms were being occupied by families who had sought shelter there because of flooding associated with Tropical Cyclone Keni.

The National Disaster Management Office has advised people to remain in evacuation centres until the weather completed improved.
