There are no special speed limits for Government vehicles and drivers going over the limit should be booked, says Police Commissioner BrigadierGeneral Sitiveni Qiliho.

He made the comment at Police headquarters in Nasinu while receiving 46 new vehicles from the Government.

Brig-Gen Qiliho said he would soon have discussions with the responsible minister for directives that all Government vehicles going over the speed limit be booked.

“If they don’t stop that’s an extra charge on them and you send it to their office,” he said.

“We seem to be the biggest abusers of road rules.

“We are all governed by the same law, unless if we are pursuing robbers or emergencies.

“The road rules are the same for everybody. There are no special speed limits for Government vehicle.”

Brig-Gen Qiliho said he had been talking to Police director traffic SSP Mahesh Mishra about the monitoring of Government vehicles. He said it was now becoming the talk of the nation that government vehicle drivers were not being taken to task when speeding.

Brig-Gen Qiliho highlighted that there had been an abuse of flickering lights.

“I will be talking to government about these flashing lights that are on vehicles,” he said. Brig-Gen Qiliho said there was a situation where road users did not give way to fire trucks, ambulances and even Police vehicles on emergency runs.

“This is because they think it is just another Government vehicle with lights blowing behind them,” he said.

“So we will be taking some tough measures to get things right.

“That is what’s important for us. We can’t go and deal with outside people if we can’t deal with ourselves first.”
