Since 2014, 10 students of Yat Sen Secondary School have been offered scholarships to complete undergraduate studies in China. This was confirmed by the school’s principal, Miriama Naicegucegu. The Chinese Embassy offered the scholarships exclusively to Year 12 and Year 13 students.

The school, in the past years, received educational and other resource material for the learning of the Chinese language, geography and history.

In 2017, the school was invited to attend the Model United Nations hosted by Beijing International School where the students of Yat Sen Secondary School performed traditional Fijian dances for the people of China.

Ms Naicegucegu thanked the Government of the People’s Republic of China for its overwhelming support and the many instances of kindness and consideration shown to Yat Sen Secondary School.

“The school acknowledged the support through the various agencies in China sponsoring such educational excursions which has further developed the public speaking, researching and debating skills of the students of Yat Sen Secondary School,” she said.

“The support of the Chinese Embassy towards the provision of cash prizes for Chinese language awardees in the annual prizegiving days is also acknowledged with much appreciation.”

CHINESE BRIDGE COMPETITION

Yat Sen Secondary School has been participating in the Annual Chinese Bridge Competition held in Kunming, Yunnan Province, in past years, says Principal Miriama Naicegucegu.

She said that has been a great opportunity for non-Chinese students to test their proficiency in the Chinese language and culture.

“In 2014, the school was awarded the best performance prize in the 7th Chinese Bridge Competition,” Ms Naicegucegu said.

“Apart from the learning of the Chinese language, a few students attempted the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) exams, indicating interest in the language.

“In 2016 and 2017, the four participants were awarded short-term scholarships to study Chinese culture in China,” Ms Naicegucegu said.
