Car veers off road, lands in river, driver in hospital
Aman was rushed to Navua Hospital after the rental car he was driving veered off a bridge into a river a few kilometres from Namosi Village on Saturday.
Namosi district rep Farasiko Saunivalu told the Fiji Sun that the driver was new to the area.
“The driver came for a wedding in the village, so he doesn’t really know the road structure here,” he said.
It is believed the driver went sightseeing with two passengers from the village and the incident happened upon their return.
“He must have lost control of the car,” he said. Mr Saunivalu said the villagers had concerns about road usage.
“We are very grateful for the road upgrades, but one thing we are worried about is the carelessness on the road.
“Drivers have no respect for the village and its people. “They drive as if they are driving on a highway.” Mr Saunivalu said at least up to five villages in the Namosi district were constructed beside the road.
“To avoid accidents such as this, we request if speed humps could be constructed on the roads leading to the villages,” he said.
“The safety of our villagers is very important to us.
“If this driver was careful and was driving slowly, this wouldn’t have happened. “We are thankful that they are still alive,” he said.
