Woman Carpenter Boosts Knowledge

- SHIRIKA SHALINI Edited by Epineri Vula

Tuliana Tabuaura is a shining example for women who believe a female’s lot is not limited to the home.

The 30-year-old graduated on Wednesday at the Japan-Pacific Multipurpose Theatre, USP Laucala Campus, in Suva from the Australia-Pacific Technical College with a Certificate III in Carpentry. She was among 145 students who graduated and says she can now boost her experience in carpentry work.

Ms Tabuaura was among five males who completed the course.

This was not her first achievement. She graduated with a Certificate in I and II in Carpentry from the National Training Productivity Centre at Narere, Nasinu.

“I choose to be in this field to encourage women that carpentry is not a male-dominated field. Women can also do this,” Ms Tabuaura said.

She said women were no longer destined to stay home, look after children and do domestic duties. At the moment, she is among a group working at Wakaya Island Resort in the Lomaiviti Group building a villa called ‘Sega Na Leqa’.

“I am the only female working with males on the Island and I have to stay for three months away from my husband and children,” Ms Tabuaura said.

She encouraged women to choose what they wanted to do in life, instead of thinking that some jobs were only for men.

“I would like to thank God, my husband and my tutors for guiding me,” Ms Tabuaura said.
