Best friends since day one of their tertiary education, Salote Vuanidilo and Marica Rakuro were among the 120 Fiji National University students who graduated on Thursday.

They were leaping and hugging each other with so much joy as they walked out the FMF Gymnasium after they received their certificates.

Ms Rakuro hails from Nadroga province and Vuanidilo is from Burenitu in Ra.

For Ms Rakuro it was one of those hard to forget and emotional days for them.

She said being in the same field with her best friend was what kept her going.

“We motivate and encourage each other to move forward in life,” Ms Rakuro said.

“We always look forward to seeing each other everyday in school.

“Today, all our struggles for the two years had paid off.

“We are so happy to be graduating together.” The duo plans to further their studies together. However, for Ms Rakuro it was a feeling of jubilation knowing an emptiness inside of her has been filled. “For me, I just wish my dad was here to see me walking up that stage and witnessing my success,” she said.

“But I know wherever he is right now, he will be jumping with joy. I did it Dad.”

Ms Rakuro’s father passed away in December last year.

“Being the eldest in the family, I always have an aim to make my parents proud,” she said.

“My family lives in Lautoka and I had to stay with my relatives in Suva, it is not easy to stay away from home, but I always have it in my heart that I am here to learn and graduate and be something in life.”
