Be vigilant with social media platform: Misir
Participants at a World Press Freedom Day workshop have been reminded to be very vigilant with social media platforms which sometimes spread fake news.
The reminder has come from University of Fiji Vice-Chancellor Professor Prem Misir while opening the workshop at UniFiji’s Saweni campus near Lautoka.
“We need journalists to report on facts and it’s important that we all celebrate this day. This is very important for all journalists for the very important role they play in society,” he added.
“It is also very important to protect our journalists from assaults and violence, hundreds of journalists have been killed across the world because of the power they have to reveal real issues affecting people.”
University of Fiji held the workshop to familiarise students with the work of journalists in conjunction with World Press Freedom Day.
As part of the workshop, Fiji Sun Senior Business journalist Charles Chambers, Department of Information West Bureau chief Isaac Lal, Police spokesperson Wame Bolatolu, Property Fiji media officer Litia Vuladausiga and Fiji Sun Nadi editor Waisea Nasokia were part of a panel discussion organised by UniFiji as part of the celebrations.
Professor Misir said journalists had a major role to play in a democratic society and were responsible for keeping the public informed on issues within Government and the private sector.
The theme for this year was “Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and the Rule of Law”. Participants were then requested to observe a minute of silence to remember journalists who were killed in the line of duty.
