More than 700 graduates from the Technical College of Fiji - Western were challenged to set big goals, be creative and become job creators.

This was highlighted by the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations Jone Usamate while officiating at the graduation held at the FMF Gymnasium on Wednesday.

“Set yourself big goals, you can grow any skill that you want and become smarter.

“Successful people use better strategies and work their way through obstacles,” Mr Usamate said.

“I would like to encourage you to become job creators and to look up the Young Entrepreneurship Scheme (YES).

“This is geared towards Fijians aged 18 and 30 who have completed the vocational or technical diploma or degree with innovative ideas and initiatives that lead to job creation.”

Minister Usamate also said the industry needs good trades’ people and technicians.

“We need to make sure we are producing the right workers that industries need.

“We need to nurture homegrown skills and more workbased learning.

“The Fijian Government’s priority is focused on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and employment. “There is a need for growth in the trade sector, investing in the people who do and not just talk or explain,” Mr Usamate said.

A total of 5353 students from the Technical College of Fiji have completed short courses and received attainment in 2017 and has also recorded a steady increase in enrolment from 2015 to 2017.
